USHS Measurement and Evaluation System

            After I finished my first observation, on the lunch break time I had small conversation with assist. professor Cynthia Lyn Curada and assist. Professor Jordan Gundran  regarding to the school measurement and evaluation system. They were so nice and gave all the information that I need. They are the teachers and also as the head of USHS staff. From the conversations there are several points made that measurement and evaluation is important components of school system.
To make sure that students able to follow the school lesson and material, every school institution have to design the grading and evaluation system based on the curriculum applied. Generally grading and evaluation is needed to measure students’ performance in the classroom and it will make the teacher easier to get feedback from the result recieved, and the core of teaching will be improved based on the feedback given. And also by conducting evaluation teacher will concern to understand the students’ need. Under the DepEd Order No.36 s. 2016 regulation. The University Science High School (USHS) adopts the regulation from the DepEd which modified and has been implemented for about two years. The school proposed that DepEd medals be replaced with Central Luzon State University (CLSU) medals and to use the CLSU core values instead of the DepEd ones. This type of learning system provides comfort for students that excelin “minor” subjects (such as Arts and Edukasyonsa Pagpapakatao) and struggle in “major” subjects (such as Mathematics and Science) to excel in their academic ranks (DepEd Order No.36 s 2016).
For the types of measurements, USHS has divided 3 types of measurement they are written work, performance task, and quarterly assessment. All the measurements are applied on every grades, started from grade 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th on junior school, while grade 11th and 12th on senior high school. The written work that’s applied were essay, essay based on exam, journals letter writing, reflection papers, book/article review, and report. While performance task including case studies, collages, compositions, literary analysis, multimedia production, portfolios, research product, story and poem writing. Also it could be debates, interviews, presentation, project making in individual or group, role play, speech delivery, and etc. On the quarterly assessment usually conducted every chapter finished discussed, or every a quarter of semester, it called summative or end semester test. Those components are used by the teacher in order to be able to assess the students’ knowledge.     
The evaluation system also has qualified the mark of students’ description; the satisfaction will come out depend on the result of assessment of the students. When the student got the highest mark “outstanding” which the grading scale is 90-100, then “very satisfactory” which the grading scale is 85-89, “satisfactory” which the grading scale is around 80-84, and “fairly satisfactory” which it has scale around 75-79 and those will be qualified that students passed the course or subject, while when the scale under 75 students will fail the class because the students qualified did not meet the expectations, and the school has to advise those who did not make it to move to another school. This tight regulation also make the students are willing to work and study hard, they were also very active to participate to solve, ask, or give opinion about the material explained by the teacher. The outstanding students also will be rewarded some categories of awards. Awardees must have at least 75% or 24 Always Observed (AO) out of 32 in their report cards. Students of USHS will also receive merit awards such as USHS Leadership Award, Best Junior High School Thesis Award, and Campus Journalism Award.
The grading system of junior and senior high school totally different, the integrity and core of weight has different frequent. The junior and Senior High School grading card system can be seen as follow:

By applying the grading and evaluation system, school believes that it will help to improve the students’ ability and increasingly to help students to face their future by having good education system. The awards also will help students’ performance to do improvements, and on of the teacher Mr. Jordan S Gundran also stated that achievement needed to help students’ psychology and willing to work harder than before
