My Precious Students

My beloved students 9 Discover and 11 Originators and Voyagers
Dear my precious students 9 Discovers and 11 Originators and Voyagers,
Thank you for everything that you have given to me, it was so sad to leave all of you because you all already become part of my soul. Thank you for your laughing, and your smile that you have shared to me, you are the reason I went to school excitedly with so much energy and passion. You all are my angel, my future star.  Thank you so much for every lesson that you gave to me, I learnt a lot from you, I thank to god everyday because of him we were giving a chance to meet and know each other.  You gave me opportunity to spread my wings and light my darkness, you sent little candle for my weaknesses.
I don’t think I have ever told you how I felt first time we met, you were so brilliant and smart, it was pleasure to be your practicum teacher during this one month. As we go on, we remember all the times we spent in the school, and now everything has changed, we still be a family together.
All of the stories in this lovely school is over. But, I’m always happy because have the time to know and meet you there, my students. Thank you for making me be a real student and alsoa  teacher. Now I must go out from this loving school. But my heart is never changed. You all always be my favorite’s students. Maybe I will forget what you have told me about Philippines words, slang words, and many more, but I never forget your kindness and service during my time there. Thank you for be my best students.

Suggestion for Bright Future

(images: glunis.com)

For overall, SEAMEO has conducted the program properly. Congratulations to all of the committee behind on this program who have arranged the program be more beneficial and meaningful for the students, especially practical students. Thank god I was be able to participate the program and it helps me to improve a lot of thing not just only my teaching ability but many developments that will help me to face the real life as a teacher in the future. But unfortunately everything was not perfect. I would like to suggest this program, and I have four main suggestion, I believe and hope this suggestion will help SEAMEO especially SEA-teacher to do improvement for better future.
First is about the announcement of the program. To be honest the date and regulation of the program was not really clear yet, my university was confusing to tell us (the other participants) about the program when it will be started. Because it was our first time to join this program, and also there was no any guidance for us from the first batch of this program. Later I hope the information and communication to the university participants will be clearer.
Second is about the program period. I think one mouth was not enough to have teaching practicum because we have really short time to practice and learn. I suggest you to extend the time it could be two months or even three months, it will strongly help the goals achieved by practicum students.
Third is about the training program. It was good using webex application to have the training section but there are some weaknesses, first one the number of students who joined the training was  very huge and also not all of the students understand how to use the application, even thought the instruction of using the application clearly posted but still many numbers of students did not read it first so the microphone was active and disturbed the speaker of the training, it actually was consuming lot of time just only to instruct them to turn off the microphone or videocam. For the power point presentation also should be written and described vividly, it will avoid miss understanding and communication. It would be better if the next training section the committee will use known and simple application which also the participant should be divided based on their destiny.
Fourth is the self-report. The instruction was not clear enough to understand, the committees expect the participants to have complete and arrange report, but the instruction need to be made clearer to avoid miss conception, because it will affect our certificate which the certificate also really important for the participants. For the suggestion, please provide a full description of how to make a good report on the blog based on the rules made.
Those are some suggestions that I can give, and hopefully the program will be better than before and also will produce more brilliant students and ready to be put in every school as professional teacher.

Challenge During Practicum

"There is no word of fail, as long as we want to try and face  it" -Melisa McHome-

The practicum actually was quite challenging, the students mostly were very active to participate or or just only curious with me because it was their first time having practicum teacher from different country they were very enthusiast which mean there was a lot of questions were asked by the students.  Some students were hyperactive in the classroom, it was very hard to face these problem in case that they were not only active within discussion but other things which out of the context such as shouting and laughing over control but i tried my best to handle the situation and applied my knowledge that I got from my class (classroom management). I was absolutely designed my own rules to save my classroom environment and created some creative activities during the learning process like group performance or individual activity. And the activity was transferred students interests successfully.
Another challenges was a few students was lack of active in participating, I had to manage the class equally no students left behind so I tried to combine some approaches in order to give those who were not active in the class a chance to participate based on their skill and psychology like, in form of written task, or group participation which asked all students to move. And unbelievable their skill was not in stating opinion orally or by moving their body but it was more specific like written project. I need to encourage all of the students but based on their need and ability instead of pushing all of my students to speak.
Accent also was become be the problem, at first and second weeks I was struggle to understand their accent even with my teacher. Since Philippines were colonized by Spanish their culture and accent were adapted by that country, but I tried to speak frequently to my students to make sure that what I have heard were correct or understandable. Then it was also related with my students’ name, mostly their names were adapted with Spanish and I was rarely heard that kind of names, and I was always pronounce their name incorrectly, and my students laughed at me.
Politeness also was become my concern, both left or right handed here are polite. I was shook when my students raised their hand by using left hand or took/gave something for me by using their left hand. At first it was so odd, but I must accept it, because my mother always say to me wherever I go I have to adjust with the environment that I lived. Have not taught which culture was right or better.

Overall Impression

I Do really love this program!
First thing, I want to say thank god, my parent, and myself. I was so proud of myself went out of my comfortable zone and took this challenge. It was really precious chance for me to learn more and elaborate myself than the others, because I believe that many students will sacrifice anything to be on this point and feel the great experiences given by the committees on this program . I’m so grateful everyday for this journey and experiences. I learned a lot of things; I met new friends, connections, and culture. Everything that I faced was actually open my eyes and my mind about diversity. How big earth is, and how small I am. This program just made me realize that, I need more to study and learn harder. I have reflected myself during the program and I found other weaknesses, I think that was the core of learning something new, we learn in order to improve by conducting reflection. Thanks to SEAMEO, during this program I was circled by great friends, my survivor friends, my teachers, students, and RSTC family who always be there when I needed something.
I could adapt faster because the weather, food, and culture almost the same as in Bali. The people were nice and welcomed me warmly. People were very kind, they were always offered anything to me, and they were handy. Especially for Mr. Gaboy, Ma’am Hiyasmin and Leleine they were so nice and fun. When we did interaction was not look like between a lecturer and their students but like children and their parent. I love them so much, they provided everything we need.
The accommodation also was really excellent, they provided us a good hostel and complete with its facilities, the house keeper was so kind and soft, and I could not say anything the service was excellent.
For the school impression was amazing, the teachers and staffs were really kind to me and others. They were always asked about our day, dinner and breakfast. They told me everything especially about the information needed related with our teaching activity. Overall they were able cooperating with me and I really love my teachers there.

Learning Outcomes

(Grade 11 classroom activities)

Learning could be done anywhere and everywhere. As long as we focus on it and try to learn intensively and the result will never disappoint us. Through learning also, there will be many aspects will be developed and it is also will open our eyes and mind wider that how big the world is and we need to discover many things. Try to be out of our comfort zone also will help us to find out the reality of this life, it will teach us to apply our knowledge in the society. -World is the laboratory, and we are the researcher-
After joined the program and conducted the teaching practicum. There are several outcomes that I got during practicum. They are: managing big class, quick in problem solving, and doing good socialization.
Managing big and real class was something that I dreamed of, not about just delivering material and knowledge but more than that. I learnt how to be good role in managing classroom activity, started from the opening till the closing of activity. Classroom management is really important to master, teacher also should give examples based on their act in order to make the students learn, and able to imitate their students itself. I highly confident to say I’m ready to apply my knowledge that I got from this practicum to handle real class. Deciding good method also was learnt, because teaching without using appropriate method going to be useless, the learning materials will not be achieved fully.
The practicum was increasing my problem solving skill, especially my problem solving teaching in the classroom. How can I manage students’ problem like their psychology and ability. It help me to be more mature to face problem, not only applicable in the classroom but also I can apply it in my real life, how I should be more patient and open mind to solve some problems.
I have seen many cultures and people background of personalities, the more people that I faced the more socialization skills that I learnt. As explained being a good teacher is not only just giving information, but how teacher can build relationship between others and engage students personality and psychology better, hopefully students will not afraid to come to school but always miss their teacher.

Procedures of Conducting teaching

After long process of election that have been conducted by my university Ganesha University of Education and the committee of SEAMEO, I was so lucky, I passed the test and became part of this program. It can be said that the process to be able to be accepted was not easy; a lot of preparation should be prepared. There was no frivolous candidates were elected, the participants were really smart and brilliant on their own subjects. After received by the receiving university, I was oriented by the university to prepare some things regarding with the schedule for the practicum, here are the procedures of practice which have prepared by the university and receiver school. It was divided into four stages of procedures.
1. Observation week. On this one full week the practical students were only focus to do observation on the school and classroom. I was introduced to the whole places in the school, started with the buildings, school system, the teachers and staffs, school facilities, school activities, and of course the students. Then the other participants were divided to our own classes which I got grade 11 and 9 for my class observation, I got introduced by the principal to my critic teacher. She was ma’am Karen J Barcelita. She was the advisor of grade 9 and I was chosen to help her to be her co-advisor. Then after being introduced to the whole school, I was given a chance to observe my classrooms on grade 11 originators and voyagers and grade 9 developers and examiners. I was observing the classes four times a day one hour each, I was supposed to consume 20 hours for observation, but there were some holydays that made the observation did not run as the schedule given.
2. Teaching Assistantship week. On this week, I did more collaboration with my critic teacher in making lesson plan and helped her in the classroom. She showed and explained me how to make good lesson plan that later I used for teaching. The lesson she taught me was different with I have learned but I have to adapt it in order to make the teaching process run well. The lesson plan used was the semi-lesson plan like what she has instructed me. And for classroom activities, I helped her to do some preparations, likes preparing projector, distributing quiz paper, and etc. I learnt a lot to prepare my teaching activity. I did many consolations to my critical about the lesson plan that I made, material that I chose, and strategies that I would apply. If there any consultations, there must be a revision, I took the revision seriously during that time.
3. Classroom teaching week. I was so excited after observation and teaching assistantship conducted, there was my chance to apply the lesson that I have been learnt. Teaching activity was conducted after the critic teacher accepted the lesson plan, materials, assignment, and strategies used. After those are accepted, the real practicum will be conducted. On this week also I had my first initial meeting (first assessment), my performance was assessed by my critic teacher Ma’am Karen and SEAMEO committee Ma’am Lalaine in order to be able to give me some feedbacks.
4. Classroom teaching and reflection. I was still have my teaching experiences for several days on this last week, but also after the final visit (final assessment) was conducted on Tuesday I was officially ended the classroom activities and it was continued with reflection. My critic teacher was told me everything regarding to my teaching experiences, she advised me and congratulated me. That was so happy to know that I did it.
So those are some stage of procedures that I have conducted before teaching activity has begun.

CLSU USHS Farewell Party

Farewell party

This is not the end, this is just the beginning, time for us to leave and end this program soon. So many tears were pouring down. The University Science High School and Central Luzon State University have prepared a farewell party for us. I was so sad to leave soon, but we could not do anything, the regulation instructed us to leave Philippines and our families here soon.
We were invited to the hotel and hospitality department and there was a room for us conducting the farewell party. The event was organized by Education Department Faculty and attended by the vice president of CLSU, the dean of Education Department Faculty, USHS teachers and the captains of our students.
The party was opened by the vice president of the university, she was sad to let us go but it was a must and let us go in order to make us learn more, CLSU was only the first stages of learning, said her. Then followed by our speech, Zaenun was the first who delivered the speech and impression during the program, and continued to Riza, Restu, Iqra, Farwa, Rara, Mandala, Rangga, and Nita the last person. All the speech was the same, we thanked all of them for everything they have given to us and we could not pay back, just wish nothing but the best for all of them. Good always bless them. Our teacher also had given a chance to deliver their last speech for us. That was sweet and amazing; they wrote every magical word for us and we would not forget it. I tried to keep my tear and never shown that to them. Rara was the poorest one, she cried all times during the party, she could not keep her feeling, and I was feeling her so well.
The next agenda was giving some tokens for the university and school. But unfortunately our university did not prepare it, I feel so sorry that time, next batch we will evaluate about it. It is important as a remembrance and mark that we were there. I love them so much, they gave everything I need in order to help me to improve myself, especially for the teacher they never tired of me for asking many things, and also I learnt a lot from my students, the helped me to be god and wise teacher. Maraming selamat po! Hope we will meet again soonest!

On the next days we were also invited to dance on International research festival. Dr. Gaboy asked us to present our culture in front of many lecturers, USHS deans, scientists, and some international researchers from Tokyo, Japan and Bangkok. It was such a honor for me to show Balinese Dance to many audiences who attended the festival, I proudly presented my identity to many people around the world.

The Purposes of Practicum

"Learning has a purpose to make a person be a human"
-Anonymous-

As stated clearly by SEAMEO, this teaching program aims to provide opportunity for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (Practicum) in school in other countries especially in Southeast of Asia. As the participant from Ganesha University of Education I was glad to be given this chance to develop my 4 competencies regarding to the teaching skill.
     A. The practicum improving my pedagogical competence, pedagogical competence is something that relate with teacher’s competence in managing the whole teaching activities including designing the teaching plan, and ability to observe the process in the class in order to be able to conduct an evaluation and giving feedback. The practicum that I have conducted was helping me to improve my pedagogical sense, started with how conducted good observation, I learned to be good observer to find out my students’ needs, students characteristics so I could make appropriate suitable based on the observation done. My evaluating skill also was developed well since I conducted my practicum there, how I was done correct evaluation including the steeps conducted on it.
     B. Second purpose is improving my professional competence. I realized since Philippines are using English as second language, the material given for the students were totally different. This situation just made me to work and master the material harder. I learnt something new, it was not just only mastering the context on the textbook, but how to deliver it fluently and meaningfully to make my students learn many more perspective.
     C. Third purpose is personal competence. This competence is about teacher self-improvement. The teaching practicum was helping me to be mature teacher. I have done everything individually and it means I was far away from home; I have to control my personal life and teaching practicum independently, I tried not to disturb any others because it was my responsibility to grow up as a good teacher. Being stable and wise during the program had finally made me able to apply it on my teaching experience. Now I become more independent to manage myself in front of my teacher as a good role of teacher.
      D. Third purpose is social competence. A human is a social creature, also the same with a teacher. A teacher’s duty is educate his/her students by applying social communicate-approach. I mostly giving instruction in spoken the interaction that I made between students and I was important to make them easily understand and made them respect me as their teacher. I have faced many faces in my life they are the same but the cultures and personalities were different. I realized Indonesia and Philippines have different culture and people personalities, and again I learned something new regarding with social communication and interaction. It was really needed to have good adapting skill, the process has made me response the environment carefully. This competence also allowed me to learn the students’ psychology faster included its treatments.
I can conclude that this program totally has a purpose to help developing practical students especially their teaching ability because it will help them to face the real classroom activity which could be wilder than with what they have faced before.

Bhuwan Ng Wikan Day

Bhuwan Ng Wikan
Hi readers! Today we don’t have any classes, because the schools was celebrating Bhuwan Ng Wikan day.

Bhuwan Ng Wikan day or Tagalong language day was held once a year on the end month of August. We were invited to participate the celebration, we wake earlier in the morning because as the co-advisor we were instructed to manage our classes to prepare and care them during the event. This celebration was celebrated by the school, it was started in the morning at 7.00 a m they students had to prepare in the hall wearing their traditional uniform and dress, for man it called Barong and for woman they have many names of their costumes, unfortunately I could not remember any of it.
(man traditional costume)

The first agenda was walking around the school and it was look like a parade, but small parade. We were participated and accompanied the parade based on the classes that we have handled as a co-advisor. The agenda was continued with a speech by an expert which the speech talked about that the researcher should frequently use Tagalog language to conduct their research in order to make the tagalong language keep everlasting used (translated by one of my student). After delivered the speech, the school has prepared some competitions, started with singing competition which the participants were from junior high school, rap competition was participated with senior high school students. They were so creative and delivered the material about man and woman responsibilities. The competitions took 2 hours to finish. Then they had a break for 15 minutes before continued to other agendas.
The third agenda was about peagent and costume competitions. The participants were from all classes consisted of 2 students (male and female) they were wearing traditional costume and need to show it and compete become the king and queen of USHS. But unfortunately we could not cool hour heels any longer because we had another agenda visiting another public school in Munoz.

The school that we have visited was University Agriculture High School (UAHS), they school was the same as USHS, they both under CLSU management. but the core of UAHS is agriculture while USHS is science. The school was not really different with USHS, but the field and system was different because the core from both of the school different. The school system was the same to one another. But one interesting thing that I found was the school train the students to plant vegetables earlier. So the system was really good.

We were practiced for several nights after we arrived from school. Rangga planned to sing “Meong-meong” Balinese traditional song, while Nita and I planned to dance Balinese dance named Parvati Mudra.
(Chinese students dancing)

School time was ended and time to go back to our hostel. We were quickly preparing ourselves, because we should be there at least at 06.00 pm. Nita helped me to put some make up on my face, I helped Rangga get dressed on. The other Sea-teachers participants also were prepared themselves and we went to University RET Cafeteria together. We rode three cycle to get there. And finally we made it even though with little bit sweaty.
(We were Introducing by the MC)

(I was dancing Parvati Mudra)

The event was continued by listening a speech of a participant from Africa, he came from Rwanda. He did not perform anything but he introduced us about his country in Africa. During Mr. Musa conducting his speech Dr. Gaboy brought us Philippines street food named Balut, a cooked chicken egg with its embryo inside. I ate it and tasted weird, well it was delicious like a steamed of heart or chicken’s lung, and it was so soft. For The event was not just about performances, food, or dance. But more than that how can we learn the diversity and accept others. Respecting others people by spread love and known each other. I was so grateful to know and meet new people, because connection is precious than a price of gold.

Pinoy (Pilipino Boy)

Laugh!
Cry!
Depress!
Angry!
Disappoint!
And, Love.
(drew by me and colored by Thao and I)

In Philippines I have another one big family. They are RSTC family, and they helped me to do everything especially the care takers Ate Rose and Kuya Jon. I did everything in my hostel, studied, making lesson plan and media, washed the laundry, cooking, and laughing with others. I also shared a room with Rangga and Iqra, we did everything regarding to prepare our teaching activity in that room. Started with Rangga who always complaining for everything, he was so talkative. But he was made the room feel like in Bali I mean so crowd. He was playing guitar for almost every night, teased Iqra for nothing and many more. Rangga’s personalities was quite different with Iqra, he was so quite, talked when he needed something or offered help. He was the youngest one and Rangga the oldest one. We shared and discussed everything related to our project, lesson plan, and even laptop to prepare the media. I’m totally going to miss all of my buds.
Rangga, Iqra and Nita was not the only students who lived there. There were many students lived there. The other participants also lived there were: Restu, Riza, Zaenun, Rara, and Farwa. Also with other students from other countries they were: Nguyen Thao from Vietnam, Suparni Somprub, Nathan, Mai Moonfang, and Ifa from Thailand, Ying and Ming from China.  At first we were too shy to know each other, or even to talk, because I was afraid to disturb them. But day by day I tried to say hi at everybody there, but we were not that close. And finally at second week were getting close to each other. There were a lot of activities we made together likes watching TV together, cooking together especially with Thai’s students Nat and Ifa. They taught me to cook Thai’s food and that was delicious. We eat and shared our own food to others, we were like a real family. We never said “No” we always helping each other, that the term of family.

(RSTC Family)

I also have practiced another language from other countries for free, I learnt Vietnamese, Thai, and mandarin languages from the native one. They were also learnt Bahasa Indonesia from me, I was struggle to learn their languages especially Vietnamese and Mandarin it was so hard to memorize and pronounce, they taught me patiently and sometimes laughed at me because I missed pronounce it, it sound funny. Those was another unforgettable moment that I had.
(Buying food at canteen together)

I love to walk to the market with others to buy some fresh food and snacks. Since the conditions of CLSU was green and really good to walk than using public transportation made me endure to spent mostly spent my time by walking to get any places. we already discovered some places in CLSU by walking. Zaenun, Iqra, Rara, and I also have experienced to go to Munoz traditional Market to buy some stuffs.
(Eating in the kitchen together)

What the best thing that I can get from this family was true relationship. It does not matter who you are, where you came from we are one on this earth. No matter what skin colors, what religion are you or your orientation. We are here for helping each other, sharing laugh and brilliant thought. We are respecting each other because we are believed that every human has it own right to be loved and respected. We never complained about nothing, Suparni Somprub once told me that I need to move on and forgive in everything. I love them so much; they were one of another precious treasure that I found during my program in Philippines.

Magandang umaga po!

I have not prepared anything on this meeting, because I was not going to teach but I was instructed to give summative test to my students on grade 11 Originators and Voyagers. Of course the test was not designed by me, but my cooperate teacher did. As usual I started the class with the prayer before I explained them the rules of the test. Checking attendance and checking class environment also have conducted. Then I gave them some instructions that should be followed during the test. The instructions were simple, they were not allowed to cheat, keep quite during the test, and do double check for the answers and their identity. The instructions were the same with in Indonesia, there was not any specific rules. I gave them 50 minutes to finish the test. The tests were contained with 20 short essays, 10 true/false questions, and draw a scheme of model communication.
For the next instruction was given by my cooperate teacher. She explained about the test and questions given. She also showed and read the question because the questions sheet was not printed yet, so she carefully explained and read the detail on every questions. The process of conducting the test was good, there was no any obstacles happened, the students submitted the test on time. They were happy because I thought they knew all of the answers.
Before the class ended, the teacher told the student that it would be my last teaching practice, and they were sad to know that. I explained them the situation, I really wanted to see them more than weeks. But the regulation could not be broken, and I have not given my speech yet. Then Ma’am Karen and I went back to the office.
