University Science High School Teaching System

On the observation day, the principal also explained the teaching system used by the school. The first one is about the school system. USHS has already applied full day school system which the school is started from 7.30 a.m to 5.00 p.m every Monday to Friday which is as the workdays of the school. The total number of school days for the S.Y. 2018 – 2019 is 201. The allowed number of absences given by DepEd is 20% of it.

 Every teacher has their own responsibility for their subject as well as their teaching time in the classroom which is about 60 minutes per subject. Moreover, the break time for both the teachers and students starts from 12.00 p.m to 13.00 p.m and then continue to the regular teaching and learning process until the last subject which is at 5.00 p.m. Teacher and Students are instructed to stay in the school during the school period of time.

            The adoption of a student-centered approach on the curriculum k-12 is strongly emphasized. Teacher no longer explain all the learning materials fully, but students are expected to manage and share their own knowledge or find that knowledge. The method applied in the school is Active Learning. Active Learning method is intended to optimize and maximize the use of all the potential possessed by students, which at the end students can achieve satisfactory learning outcomes according to their personal characteristics. Active Learning method is also intended to keep the attention of students during the learning process to stay awake and focused on the lesson. Another benefit is students will able to learn to be more critical in every situation, we know that critical thinking is needed to be developed in order to make us able to face the global era and also students will easily to manage something, because they were trained to be independent learners but still guided by the students to keep them on the track.

For the material resources, teacher still provides textbook or handouts for the learning activity, because those thing really important to use as the foundation for the teacher to teach the students. So papers are still need. Need to know, in one meeting there should be 3 cores of activity should be conducted, one is giving the material as clear as possible, assign the students to make sure that nobody left behind, and the third one is assess the students knowledge. 

Hereinafter, managing and providing good technique or method to create an exciting and enjoyable learning environment for students are needed, because nowadays students’ psychology is not the same anymore, the improvement of teaching way is needed to be developed. Some components of learning, such as opening and closing, explaining, classroom management basic and advanced questions, and reinforcement, as well as follow-up activity are also included in the implementation of lessons at training schools in this school. In terms of assessment, the teacher gives post-test after the taught material is finished. To provoke student participation, the author uses reinforcement in the form of positive reinforcement. In this case, students will be awarded a bonus of value if students can answer and participate actively in the class.

Answering 21 century on learning, teacher also should provide and using attractive method of teaching, using smart media needed to improve teaching variety in order to make the students understand easier and also help them engage with the technology. Using good media also hopefully will provide students and teachers with good responsibility; I believe that character education also should be applied together with the development of digital era.
